Comments for Dr. James Petko
In November, 2007, I went to Dr. Petko to have new orthotics made to replace the ones I was wearing. I was charged $595.00 for the orthotics. I picked them up 3 weeks later. The orthotics were not comfortable and hurt my feet. I tried them in various athletic shoes from Dr. Petko's list. I was charged for this follow-up visit.
I went back to him and told him of the problems with the orthotics that they caused foot pain and would not fit into any shoes, etc. He said it was the shoes not the orthotics. He said he did not see anything wrong with them. I again was charged for this visit. I then tried more shoes from his list. Still there was no difference.
I went back again to discuss the fit of the orthotics and that after trying various shoes, that it was not the shoes. Again, I was charged for the visit. He said that he could send them back at my expense, that there was nothing wrong with them. He was dismissive of my concerns. I expressed that it was not right for him not to take responsibility for creating the orthotics which did not fit properly. He response was that I could go for a second opinion. I visited two other podiatrists and they confirmed that they were not right for my feet. And, that I would have to have new casts done again and start over again to make them. It was recommended that I report Dr. Petko's actions to the Virginia Podiatric Association. They intervened on my behalf as did my credit card company who disputed this charge.
Ultimately, I was given a credit for the orthotics on February 22, 2007. I would not reccommend going to this Doctor for orthotics. He charge is higher than others and he charges for every follow-up visit to the patient who is trying to get a functioning orthotic. Most importantly he refuses to make any adjustments unless the patient pays for it. I have worn orthotics for many years; this is neither the practices nor conduct of other podiatrist.
When asked, other podiatrist state that they work with their patient and stand behind the custom orthotics and continue to work with patients in adjustments for as long as it takes.
I am writing this hopefully to save others the possiblity of an unfortunate experience. A Doctor who is not accountable for his responsibility to his patients is not worth going to for any reason.
In hindsight, I should have recognized from the first visit that Dr. Petko's hurried approach and attitude was not courteous and respectful in tone and manner.
