This particular doctor was perfectly professionally competent, but if you are having your first baby and you are expecting empathy or even some faux enthusiasm, pick another doctor. I found her style to be a bit cold. I felt that I was treated as though I were a number (and certainly I was one of many pregnant women she saw in a day); I never sensed that she was interested in the outcome of my pregnancy from a personal perspective. I wish I'd known enough to get a new doctor, however, it was my first child and I didn't think it would be a good idea to switch doctors half-way through my pregnancy. The moment that crystalized it for me was when I found myself in the hospital for an ultrasound that she had scheduled for me. The ultrasound area is not well marked, and I accidently found myself on the labor and delivery section of the floor where I ran into my doctor who was on duty at the time. I was happy to see her, since I usually saw her at her office down the street, AND because it was so close to my due date. I gave her a very warm 'hello'. She hardly looked up from behind the nurse's station desk, and when she did, she asked 'What are you doing here? You're not supposed to be in this section until you're in labor.' She didn't even smile. Even my mother, who was with me at the time, was surprised at how rude she was. By contrast, several other of her partners were always kind and wonderful to me on the occasions that I had to see them. Luckily, Dr. MacDonald did not deliver my baby into the word. Having a baby is a special time in a woman's life. A burned-out doctor should pick a new area of specialty. |
