Comments for Dr. Tina Matthews
Dr. Tina Matthews of Etobicoke was my family doctor. I saw her regarding an alarming condition which had suddenly appeared. I felt her diagnosis didn't make sense, so I sought a second opinion right away. The second doctor diagnosed me as having a potentially fatal condition which my doctor had missed, and prescribed the necessary antibiotics immediately. When Dr. Matthews was informed of this, she fired me from her practice. She also took 8 days to notify me of lab results, which was too long. Prior to this I had found her helpful, and I liked the fact that she usually referred me to a specialist for specific complaints - perhaps things she felt were outside of her expertise. It's unfortunate she didn't give me a referral in this case. If she had not fired me, I would have continued as her patient, because I think we all make mistakes. But for her to say, in effect, that a second opinion is unacceptable by firing the patient - especially when she had overlooked a serious condition, is unacceptable in my view. A doctor must accept second opinions as a necessary and useful part of their profession. Sometimes we trip over our own egos.
