I went to this doctor for an infection in my cheek/jaw that seems to be an abscess. The first visit was rather expensive, he gave a shot of an antibiotic that was very expensive and I was not told the cost up front, and he prescribed a rather expensive antibiotic too. His office was littered with freebees from drug companies and the majority of the supplies in the room such as tempature strips and toung depressors all seemed to be drug company freebies (it makes me wonder if that is why he is using such expensive drugs).
So nether antibiotic works and the condition is worsening, and I call to ask if he can phone in a prescription for an alternative antibiotic (on the next day). I get a call back that I will have to come into the office. I have to wait 2 hours, during which he only sees 2 patients, but doesn't mind spending quite a while with a drug company rep with 2 bags of free stuff. He goes into the back with two bags marked with a drug name (I think it was celabrex but cannot remember for sure), and after a while he comes out with one bag, and starts giving a bunch of pens and stuff to the girls at the counter. So I finally see the doctor and he is dumb founded. He actually seemed speachless. He said that the combination of these two drugs always works. He has no idea what to do, and of course he could not tell me that on the phone, I had to come in and pay for an office visit for him to do nothing. He refers me to a specialist who charges me 150$ and prescribes another antibiotic (what I asked this doctor for in the first place).
So it cost me 410$ (125$ first office visit, 80$ shot, 55$ follow up, 150$ to the specialist to do what this doctor should have been able to do), plus cost of prescriptions. That seems pretty steep to get an antibiotic for an infection. I only paid 8$ each for the prescriptions (insurance) but had I not had insurance, the first antibiotic was quite expensive. I have not gone to the doctor till this time this year, so due to my deductible, I had to pay almost all of it.
This guy seems to be all about the money (and all the free stuff he can get from the drug companies for prescribing/using their latest and most expensive drugs), and not too much about patient care.
