Not given Our visits to Dr. Trolice started off well. At the first consultation, he gave us his time and encouraged us to ask any questions we had. We were impressed by this, as doctors are often in a hurry to get to the next patient.

However, things began going downhill. The first instance that I can remember was during the HSG test (a procedure to test whether or not the fallopian tubes are blocked). When I entered the room, there was equipment unfamiliar to me (including a huge syringe with a huge needle at the end), so I was quite nervous. When Dr. Trolice entered the room along with the technician who was to assist him, he was cracking jokes with her. I don't recall him even acknowledging that I was in the room with any sort of greeting. It felt as though he was going on with his socializing with the staff, and his only words directed toward me for quite a long time was another joke: 'Oh, don't worry, she [the technician] is certified.'

Being treated for infertility is stressful enough. So is lying down on an examination table with radioactive dye being plunged into my cervix. It showed a lack of professional courtesy and compassion to be cracking jokes at a time when I, his patient, would have appreciated explanation of each step that he was taking during this intimidating procedure.

However, this experience in itself wasn't negative enough to stop us from going to his office. It was the last appointment that was the most disappointing and maddening.

Since many of the infertility tests had to be timed according to my cycle, it took quite a few months to complete the infertility tests. Our job transfer to Orlando was only for a limited time, therefore we had to squeeze in a final consultation with the doctor the day before moving out of our apartment. It was our understanding from the very beginning that, once the round of tests were completed, we would meet with the doctor for a final consult before proceeding with treatment. Our expectation for this appointment was, even though we couldn't continue treatment with him, that he would review the tests, make an assessment/diagnosis, and recommend a next course of action. When we sat down across from him at his desk, his first words to us was something to the effect of, 'Why are you here?' (To clarify, he didn't seem to be communicating, 'So what can I do to help you?') The final consult wasn't our idea; it seemed to a part of what he does with every patient, so we were a bit stunned that he didn't have anything prepared to share with us. Surely he knows why we're here, I thought, he's the doctor! So I proceeded to remind him of my test results and explained that, since we were moving the next day and couldn't continue treatment with him, we would like to know what our next step should be. He said something like, 'What, do you want me to help you pack or something?'

Perhaps he has a good track rate with successful pregnancies. I can't comment on that. But his lack of respect for me and my husband as his patients was something I have never encountered before with medical professionals.

He eventually did answer our question at the final consult, but I left his office wanting both to cry and to warn all of my friends in the Orlando area not to entrust their infertility care to Dr. Trolice.
