2006 I was being treated for an extremely bad toenail fungal infection involving all of my toes. I had started a course of Lamisil 3 months earlier. My own doctor was not in on the day I came for a toenail clipping. The nurse didn't want to work on me because my toes were too swollen. This was a result of years of ineffective care from my treating physician. I had some ingrown nails that the nurse said she wasn't qualified to treat. I have been suffering with this condition for most of my adult life and was in quite a bit of pain that day. The thought of being sent home without treatment caused me to begin crying. She asked the doctor to come in an look at my feet and possibly remove the ingrown nails. The doctor entered the room, hardly glanced at my feet, saw me crying and said, " You're very emotional about this, I think you need to go home and calm down." When I protested that I was crying because I was in pain and was fearful of being sent home again without treatment, he told me the problem was with my head, not my feet. He insisted that I needed psychological help. I was incredulous that he would say something like that to me without any history. I tried to show him the ingrown nails that were hurting me, calcium deposits in my skin from years of medical neglect. He insisted he couldn't see anything and if he couldn't see it, it wasn't there. He continued to taunt me about my need for psychological help, until I ran out of the office, crying. I have submitted a grievance to my HMO.
