I visited the Dr's office in Dec. 2006 with chief complaint of sudden onset of diffuse unpatterned thinning of scalp hair with a previous occurrence ten years ago. Both occurrences coincide with a period of resistance training activity and resulted in a 50% loss of hair volume. I was treated dismissively and told that hair thinning is natural with age. I had to remind the dr. that age related thinning is too subtle in onset and too linear in progression to be identified with the degree of detail that I provided. Additionally, age related thinning could never be identified as having occurred twice. Actually, my observations are consistent with someone experiencing effluvium, something the dr. missed. After pointing this out to him; he suggested in a patronizing tone that elevated levels of testosterone as a result of working out may be to blame. I had to point out to him that DHT does not manifest as diffuse unpatt. thinning in a male. DHT never adversely impacts hair in the occiput as follicles in this region of the scalp lack the necessary androgen receptors for DHT to bind to. Additionally, my hair volume recovered after the first incident upon cessation of my workout regime, something that couldn't occur if DHT was the cause. Diffuse, unpatt. thinning in a male is pathognomonic for hormone imbalance or metabolic dysfunction and as such the protocol is a blood panel measuring T3, T4, TSH, LH, free test., total test., serum ferritin levels, etc. If I know this I'm not sure why he doesn't. It appears I'm experiencing what's called Long Duration telogen effluvium with weight training being the inciting activity. The primary cause is being investigated but the dr. I'm now under the care of suspects thyroid dysfunction which in my case manifests only when working out. The most opportune time to have identified this cause was when I made the appt. with Dr. Parikh but regrettably the requisite blood work wasn't done. In my opinion, Dr. Parikh lacks the critical thinking skills necessary to navigate the more challenging cases and would not select him as a physician on any condition requiring more than routine care. |

I can assure you that this is a patient rating because I am that patient and those are my words. The physicians who have followed up on this case practice outside of Manhattan and have patient demographic profiles that differ from those of Dr. Parikh, hence they wouldn't be looking to 'steal' his patients.
The only other doctors aware of this are former college classmates with whom I did pre-med science classes with (no I'm not a health care professional) and my cousin who is a medical director outside the state. None of them are dermatologists, hence they're not looking to 'steal' his patients either.
