Had molar pulled. Sent to Slaughter by my regular dentist due to the fact that there is a nerve that can be damaged in my jaw that ran very close to the tooth. When I arrived for my appointment I was told I had to be put under; I asked many times why this was so, (it seemed unnecessary to me-I have had a molar pulled before) was not given an answer except "this is the way it is always done" & "this is the way it needs to be done". My insurance company deemed it unnecessary also, I quote: GENERAL ANESTHESIA IS NOT REASONABLY NECESSARY OR CUSTOMARILY PERFORMED IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE SERVICES SUBMITTED. I called Slaughters office to try to clear up the matter, was hung up on by the first woman I spoke with, called back and spoke with, asked again to explain why I was put under, was told it was easier because the patient is calm (!). Was told they would send an appeal to my insurance company (they still refused to pay). In receiving a copy of the appeal letter I discovered Slaughters office wrote "Patient was given general anesthesia at the time of the extractions due to failure of local anesthesia to control pain due to prolonged surgical procedure." One, local was never an option I was told, and two, when I woke up I asked how long it took and was told "about 20 minutes". About the same it took for the one I was awake for. In my defense I went ahead because the tooth was really bothering me and I guess I eventually believed they were the experts and knew what they were talking about.
